One of the experiences that has continued to shape my life is the 3 years that I lived in Japan. I lived in Hamamatsu for 2 years and Numazu for 1 year (both in Shizuoka Prefecture, roughly halfway between Tokyo and Osaka). I taught English in public schools through the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching Program). I strongly recommend this program to anyone with a four year college degree who has an interest in living in Japan while being paid well to do so. You don't even need to speak Japanese, although it can be very helpful. After renewing my contract for the maximum 3rd year, I returned to the US, and I have not been the same since.
